This classic Montserrat overprint issue features the profile of King George V on the 1½d orange definitive, later surcharged during World War I with the bold “WAR STAMP” overprint to help raise wartime revenue. Issued between 1916–1917, these overprints exist with several minor type and spacing varieties that collectors actively seek. The underlying design shows the monarch’s portrait alongside the island’s emblematic female figure with harp.
