SCG8855 - Haiti 1961 Dr. François Duvalier Overprint on “Capois-La-Mort” – 2.50 Gourdes
1 in stock
This striking Haitian stamp features the classic “Capois-La-Mort” design—commemorating the heroism of General François Capois during the Battle of Vertières on 18 November 1803. Originally issued earlier in the 20th century and printed by the American Bank Note Company, this engraved 2.50-gourdes stamp was later overprinted on 22 May 1961 to mark the self-proclaimed presidency-for-life of Dr. François Duvalier (“Papa Doc”). The bold black surcharge gives it strong historical significance tied to Haiti’s political era under Duvalier. Postally used examples like this one are especially desirable due to the short-lived nature of the overprint and its association with a turbulent chapter of Haitian history.
