This beautiful Austrian Christmas stamp of 1990 (Weihnachten 1990) features a depiction of the Nativity from the Verdun Altar (Verduner Altar) at the Monastery of Klosterneuburg. Designed by A. Nefe and engraved by K. Gessner, it shows Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus in a radiant medieval-style mosaic composition. Above the manger, the Latin inscription “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” echoes the angelic proclamation of Christ’s birth. The stamp’s golden tones, deep blue background, and stylized Gothic framing reflect Austria’s long artistic tradition of sacred art and craftsmanship.
