SCG8356 - 200th Anniversary of Maurelle’s Visit – Solomon Islands (1981)
1 in stock
Issued by the Solomon Islands in 1981, this 10-cent commemorative stamp marks the bicentennial of Spanish explorer Francisco Antonio Mourelle’s 1781 voyage in La Princesa. The design features a reproduction of a 1742 map by Bellin, tracing Maurelle’s route across the western Pacific, including the Solomon Islands, New Ireland, and New Britain. The red line symbolizes his exploratory path through largely uncharted waters of the 18th century. The stamp also carries the royal cypher “E II R,” linking the commemoration to the British Commonwealth heritage of the islands.
