SCG8230 - Monaco – 1958 “Centenary of the Apparitions of Lourdes” (1 Franc)
1 in stock
This 1958 commemorative stamp from Monaco honors the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes (1858–1958). The design prominently features the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle, surrounded by inscriptions from her message “Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou” (“I am the Immaculate Conception”), rendered in Occitan. Flanking her are portraits of Pope Pius IX (who defined the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854) and Pope Pius XII, who commemorated its centenary.
Designed and engraved by J. Piel, the stamp combines deep violet and brown hues to create a reverent and spiritual composition. It reflects Monaco’s deep Catholic heritage and artistic devotion to Marian iconography.
