Issued by Deutsche Bundespost in 1959, this 20 + 10 Pfennig Wohlfahrtsmarke (charity stamp) illustrates the classic Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale Der Froschkönig (“The Frog Prince”). The design portrays the princess seated at a royal table opposite the enchanted frog, framed by green curtains. The surcharge of 10 Pf supported welfare work in postwar Germany. This series marked the beginning of the long-running annual “Fairy Tale Welfare” issues that remain a hallmark of German philately.
