This trio of Italian definitive stamps belongs to the long-running Castelli d’Italia (Castles of Italy) series issued beginning in 1980. The 650 lire stamp features the Castle of Serralunga d’Alba, a striking medieval fortress in Piedmont; the 750 lire depicts the Castle of Venafro, a historic stronghold in Molise; and the 800 lire shows Rocca Maggiore of Assisi, the imposing Umbrian fortress overlooking the saint’s hometown. Designed by G. Verdelocco and printed by IPZS Roma in photogravure, these stamps are admired for their consistent circular vignette design and delicate color work, symbolizing Italy’s rich architectural heritage.
