SCG8052 - Chad 1966 “Art Sao” Issue – Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres
1 in stock
Issued by the République du Tchad in 1966, this striking four-stamp set celebrates Art Sao, the ancient civilization that flourished along the Chari and Logone Rivers. The designs reproduce bronze and terracotta artifacts excavated by French archaeologists Lebeuf, Griaule, and Courtin at sites such as Bouta Kebira. Each denomination—15F, 20F, 60F, and 80F—depicts distinctive Sao creations including pendants, pectorals, and sculptural heads, printed in earthy tones evocative of Chad’s archaeological heritage. Released for the Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres in Dakar, the series honors Africa’s cultural revival and the rediscovery of its earliest artistic traditions.
