This 15-cent Ethiopian postage stamp features the Coracias abyssinica, or Abyssinian Roller, a vividly blue bird native to the savannas of East Africa. Rendered in rich shades of turquoise and cobalt, the bird is shown perched on a branch against a pale green background. At upper right is a portrait of Emperor Haile Selassie I, symbolizing Ethiopia’s national pride and natural heritage. Printed by Courvoisier S.A. of Switzerland, this issue is part of a mid-20th-century series celebrating Ethiopia’s diverse fauna under imperial patronage.
