Issued by the République du Tchad in 1963, this 5 Francs stamp from the “Art Sao” series showcases an ancient clay sculpture excavated at the Lebeuf archaeological site. The stamp highlights Chad’s deep cultural roots in the Sao civilization, which flourished around Lake Chad between the 6th and 16th centuries. Designed and engraved by Bequet and Cottet, the piece features the distinctive textured artistry of Sao pottery in rich brown tones set against a green frame. A beautiful tribute to one of Central Africa’s earliest known cultures.
