SCG7736 - Austria 1978 – 150 Years of the Vienna City Temple
1 in stock
Issued by Austria in 1978, this 1.50 schilling commemorative stamp celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Wiener Stadttempel (Vienna City Temple), the oldest surviving synagogue in Vienna. The design by Adalbert Pilch depicts the richly decorated interior, with the Torah Ark framed by Corinthian columns and Hebrew inscriptions. Despite the devastation of Kristallnacht in 1938, the temple miraculously survived due to its location within a block of residential buildings. This issue honors both Jewish heritage and Austria’s commitment to cultural remembrance.
