SCG7432 - South Africa 1d “Dromedaris” Ship Issue
1 in stock
This classic South African 1 penny (1d) stamp features the Dromedaris, one of the three ships commanded by Jan van Riebeeck on his 1652 voyage that led to the founding of Cape Town. The design depicts the sailing vessel in full rig, with rays of the rising sun in the background—symbolizing the dawn of European settlement at the Cape. The frame, printed in carmine red, is adorned with laurel leaves, while the central vignette is in black. Issued under the Union of South Africa (circa 1926–1930), it served both for postage and revenue, reflecting the dual-purpose nature of many colonial-era issues.
