Issued by the United States in 1937 as part of the Presidential Series (Prexie), this 4½-cent green stamp depicts The Hermitage, the Tennessee plantation home of Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States. Engraved in fine detail, the design shows the stately Greek Revival façade surrounded by trees. The unusual 4½¢ denomination was used primarily for third-class and international surface rates. The overprint seen on this example indicates its later use in the Canal Zone, where U.S. stamps were surcharged for local postal use.
