SCG7395 - Mexico: 10 Centavos Green “Hidalgo” (circa 1879–1883)
1 in stock
This classic Mexican postage stamp features the left-facing profile of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the revered leader of Mexico’s War of Independence. Printed in a rich emerald green, it bears the inscription “Servicio Postal Mexicano” and the denomination “DIEZ CENTAVOS” within an ornate oval frame. Produced by the Mexico Government Printing Office (Oficina del Gobierno), this issue represents part of the late 19th-century engraved series that standardized national postal design. The intricate guilloché background and serif numerals “10” in each corner are characteristic of early Mexican craftsmanship in stamp production.
Collector’s Note:
Used examples like this one, with visible black circular cancellations, are highly sought after for their crisp engraving and early postal history context. Variations in shade, paper thickness, and watermarking can affect catalog classification (notably between 1879 and 1883 issues).
