SCG7392 - Travancore Anchel – 4 Cash Overprint (Maruthurkulangara Bridge Issue)
1 in stock
This brown postage stamp from the princely state of Travancore (India) shows His Highness Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore, in an oval frame at left. Behind him appears the Marthanda Varma Bridge at Alwaye, an important landmark representing modern infrastructure during his reign.
Originally denominated ¾ Chuckram, the stamp has been surcharged “4 CASH” in black to reflect a new postal rate — part of a series of overprints issued during rate adjustments in the late 1930s–1940s. The word “Anchel”, derived from the Malayalam term for post, signifies the Travancore postal department that operated independently before integration into the Indian postal system in 1949.
This overprinted issue is a sought-after classic among collectors of Indian States, especially for its dual-script inscriptions in English and Malayalam and its glimpse into Travancore’s postal and architectural heritage.
