SCG7387 - Travancore Anchel – Conch Shell 1 Chuckram (c.1906–1911)
1 in stock
This is a classic Travancore Anchel postage stamp from the princely state of Travancore (now part of Kerala, India). The central design features the conch shell (shankha), a traditional emblem of the Travancore royal family, symbolizing divinity and authority. The inscriptions are bilingual — in English (“Travancore Anchel”) and Malayalam, the local script.
The stamp is printed in deep blue with red control markings, typical of early Travancore issues used to denote authenticity and prevent forgery. The denomination “One Chuckram” appears at the bottom — the chuckram was an old unit of currency used in southern India prior to standardization with the Indian rupee system.
These stamps were issued under the Travancore Anchel postal system, which operated independently before the integration into the Indian Post in 1949. Used examples like yours, especially with clear red control marks and legible cancellation, are prized by collectors of Indian Feudatory States.
