SCG7099 - Château de Joux – Fortress of the Jura Mountains (France, 1964)
1 in stock
This 1.30 franc French definitive stamp, issued in 1964, features the majestic Château de Joux, an ancient fortress located in the Doubs department of eastern France near the Swiss border. Perched dramatically atop a rocky cliff, the castle overlooks the Cluse de Pontarlier, symbolizing centuries of military and political history. Once a medieval stronghold and later a state prison, it famously held Toussaint Louverture, leader of the Haitian Revolution, who died there in 1803. The engraving, by Pierre Gandon after a design by Durand, captures the rugged grandeur of the Jura landscape in sepia tones.
