SCG6902 - France (Red Cross Semi-Postal Overprint, “L’Enfant en Pierrot”)
1 in stock
This French Red Cross semi-postal stamp features L’Enfant en Pierrot (“Child as Pierrot”), after the painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. The design depicts a young child in a soft, ruffled costume, symbolizing innocence and compassion — themes befitting the Red Cross cause.
Originally issued in metropolitan France, this particular version was overprinted for use in French West Africa (noted by the “CFA” and changed denomination to 12 + 5 CFA). The surcharge (+5) represented a charitable contribution to the Red Cross. The crossed-out 0.25 + 0.10 values indicate the adaptation from a previous issue.
A beautiful example of France’s post-colonial semi-postal adaptations, this stamp unites fine art, humanitarian purpose, and colonial postal history.
