SCG6842 - Spain 1984 – Pilgrimage of the Nun Egeria
1 in stock
This 40 peseta commemorative stamp from Spain was issued in 1984 to mark the 1600th anniversary of the journey of the nun Egeria (381–384 A.D.) to the Biblical East. The design shows Egeria on a donkey, symbolizing her pilgrimage from Hispania to the Holy Lands, with a stylized map marking regions such as Egypt, Sinai, Palestine, and Mesopotamia. The pillars marked “LEG. IX HISPANIA” reference the Roman heritage of her homeland.
Egeria is celebrated as one of the earliest known Christian pilgrims and travel writers; her detailed letters describing the holy sites form a key source on early Christian liturgy and geography. This stamp elegantly combines religious, historical, and cartographic symbolism to honor her pioneering spiritual voyage.
