Originally issued as a Red Cross charity stamp, it was later overprinted for use in French West Africa with the new value 10 + 5 CFA, replacing the earlier 0.20 + 0.10 F denomination. The design, engraved by J. Piel, depicts a delicate feminine portrait rendered in rich reddish-brown tones with the iconic red cross emblem. Such overprints were made to adjust currency and support humanitarian causes, making this an appealing issue for both Red Cross and French colonial collectors.
