The 4 cent stamp celebrates the Centenary of Napier (1874 – 1974) and depicts the Marine Parade Statue of Pania of the Reef, a symbol of the city’s resilience after its 1931 earthquake. The 5 cent and 8 cent stamps commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU 1874 – 1974): the former showing the famous Zytglogge Clock Tower in Berne, Switzerland (where the UPU was founded), and the latter featuring the UPU emblem with winged figures circling the globe symbolizing global communication. Together, they capture New Zealand’s participation in international postal unity and local heritage.
