SCG5176 - Republic of Congo 1962 – Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Issue
1 in stock
This commemorative set of stamps was issued by the Republic of Congo in 1962 to honor Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, who tragically died in a plane crash in 1961 during a peace mission in Africa. Each stamp features a portrait of Hammarskjöld set against the outline of the African continent, with the UN emblem prominently included. The inscriptions reference “Paix, Travail, Austerite...” (Peace, Work, Austerity), a statement from Prime Minister Cyrille Adoula of the Congo, dated 11 July 1962. Printed by Courvoisier S.A., the issue reflects the deep appreciation for Hammarskjöld’s efforts in fostering peace during the turbulent Congo Crisis. Denominations include 10c, 20c, 30c, and 40c.
