The design depicts his portrait in armor, with a background showing a warship, symbolizing his service during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Van Ghent commanded the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Solebay in 1672, where he was mortally wounded. The stamp carries a denomination of 17½ cents and is printed in a deep blue shade.
