Issued in 1930, these Spanish airmail stamps depict the Monastery of La Rábida, a historic Franciscan convent in Huelva, closely tied to Christopher Columbus’ preparations for his first voyage to the New World. The design, engraved by Waterlow & Sons Ltd., London, shows the monastery in fine detail with “ESPAÑA CORREO AEREO” inscribed below. These are the 5 céntimos denomination, presented here in two different printings: red and brown. Both are part of Spain’s early aviation-themed series, which combined national monuments with airmail usage. Collectors prize these issues for their crisp engraving, dual color varieties, and their role in Spain’s pioneering airmail history.
