SCG4979 - Montenegro – King Nicholas I Definitive Issue (Early 1900s)
1 in stock
This set of definitive postage stamps from Montenegro features the portrait of King Nicholas I Petrović-Njegoš, who ruled from 1860 to 1918. The stamps were issued in the early 20th century, during Montenegro’s final years as a kingdom before unification into Yugoslavia. Each denomination shows the King in traditional Montenegrin attire, richly decorated with medals and insignia.
The series was printed in a range of vivid colors, with values from 2 para to 1 kruna, intended for everyday postal use. These stamps are notable for their elegant ornamental frame design, Cyrillic inscriptions, and fine engraving. Well-centered mint examples with full gum are particularly sought after by collectors of Balkan and pre-Yugoslav philately.
This set remains a historically significant issue, symbolizing Montenegro’s sovereignty just before the political changes of World War I.
