SCG3995 - Title: United Kingdom – 1854 One Penny Red (Plate Position H–L)
1 in stock
This stamp is a classic Penny Red from the United Kingdom, issued in 1854 as a successor to the famous Penny Black. It features the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, engraved by Charles Heath and based on William Wyon’s portrait. Printed in a rich red shade, it carries the plate position letters “H–L” in the lower corners, and “POSTAGE” at the top with “ONE PENNY” at the bottom.
The Penny Reds were line-engraved and issued on perforated paper starting in 1854, replacing earlier imperforate issues. This particular example shows a barred cancellation across the portrait, typical of the period. Collectors value these stamps based on plate number, perforation, condition, and cancellation clarity, with rarer plate positions and clean strikes commanding higher premiums.
