SCG3993 - United Kingdom – 1854 One Penny Red (Plate Numbered Issue)
1 in stock
This is a classic One Penny Red from Great Britain, featuring the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria. Issued in 1854, the Penny Red replaced the famous Penny Black, retaining the same design but in red to make cancellations more visible. The stamp shows the corner check letters C–Q, used as security measures to prevent forgery.
The bold black numeral cancellation “113” is clearly struck across the portrait, indicating postal use and adding character to the piece. These numeral obliterators corresponded to specific towns and cities, allowing collectors to trace postal history. The Penny Reds are among the most widely collected Victorian issues, with countless plate varieties, watermark differences, and cancellation types making them a rich field for philatelists.
For collectors, this stamp represents an essential piece of British philatelic heritage, embodying the early evolution of postage stamps after the revolutionary Penny Black.
