This is a Penny Red, issued in Great Britain as the successor to the famous Penny Black. Printed in red ink to discourage reuse, it features Queen Victoria’s left-facing profile designed by William Wyon and engraved by Charles Heath. The check letters in the lower corners (here "D" and "F") identify the stamp’s position on the printing sheet. These stamps were line-engraved and went through numerous plate variations, making them a rich field for specialized study. With its characteristic Maltese Cross/postal numeral cancellation, it remains a cornerstone of any Victorian-era British collection.
