SCG3983 - United Kingdom – Penny Red (Queen Victoria)
1 in stock
The stamp shown is the Penny Red, issued in the United Kingdom as the successor to the famous Penny Black. First introduced in 1841, it remained in circulation until 1879. It features a left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, engraved by Charles Heath and his son Frederick, based on the original design by William Wyon.
This example shows corner letters “M – I”, which identified the stamp’s position on the printing sheet. The intricate checkered background and engine-turned design helped deter forgeries. The Penny Red was printed using line-engraving and typically perforated from 1854 onward, replacing earlier imperforate issues.
Collectors prize these stamps for their wide range of plate numbers (1–225), shades, and cancellations. Its historical significance lies in its role as Britain’s standard definitive stamp for almost four decades, making it a cornerstone of classic philately.
