This is an early Canadian postal stationery card, denominated 1 cent, featuring a printed indicium with the profile of Queen Victoria in lilac. The design is framed oval with the inscription CANADA POSTAGE ONE CENT, issued for domestic postcard use. The top banner carries the inscription CANADA POST CARD, flanked by stylized ornaments resembling flowing ribbons.
The example shown is used, addressed to Harrow, Ontario, with a handwritten message dated March 28 (year uncertain, likely late 19th century). The card demonstrates the period’s postal practice where only the address was permitted on the front, while the reverse side was reserved for correspondence.
Such cards were introduced following the Universal Postal Union reforms, offering an economical and standardized means of communication. Collectors value them both for their postal history interest (routes, rates, handwriting, and destinations) and for the various printings and shade differences of the indicium.
