SCG3943 - United States – 1973 Postal Card 100th Anniversary of the First U.S. Postal Card (1873–1973)
1 in stock
This commemorative postal card was issued by the United States on September 14, 1973, in Washington, D.C., to mark the centenary of the first U.S. postal card. The design reproduces the original 1873 1¢ postal card issued under Postmaster General John A. J. Creswell, featuring a portrait of Liberty within an ornate frame.
The imprinted indicium bears the 1¢ denomination, printed in deep carmine, and is surrounded by decorative border work replicating the original card’s style. The lower left inscription reads: “First U.S. Postal Card Adapted to Commemorate Its 100th Anniversary 1873–1973.”
This example bears the First Day of Issue cancellation, dated September 14, 1973, Washington, D.C. The reverse side is blank, as issued.
For collectors, this postal card holds dual significance—both as an official U.S. commemorative issue and as a nostalgic reproduction of the very first government-issued postal stationery in American history.
