This 1959 semi-postal stamp from the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (East Germany) honors Mathias Thesen (1891–1944), a German anti-fascist and resistance fighter. Featuring a stylized portrait against a deep red background, the 20+10 pfennig stamp was designed by Skribelka. The additional 10 pfennig surcharge supported welfare causes. Thesen, a committed communist, was executed by the Nazis for his resistance activities. This issue is part of a series commemorating German anti-fascists.
