Issued by France, this 1964 semi-postal stamp honors Dominique Jean Larrey (1766–1842), the pioneering surgeon of Napoleon’s army. Known as a founding figure of modern battlefield medicine, Larrey introduced rapid evacuation (“flying ambulances”) and humane treatment of wounded soldiers. The additional surcharge (+0.10) supported Red Cross humanitarian efforts, reflected by the prominent red cross symbol. The finely engraved portrait highlights classic French stamp artistry of the era. A significant piece for collectors of medical history, military heritage, and Red Cross issues.
