SCG8882 - Greece – 50 Lepta Diagoras of Rhodes with “ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ ΝΕΑΙ” Surcharge
1 in stock
This Greek stamp began as the 1937 “Diagoras Olympionikis” issue, celebrating the legendary Rhodian athlete Diagoras, shown being carried triumphantly by his victorious sons after an Olympic victory. Originally denominated 50 lepta, this example carries the bold violet overprint “ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ ΝΕΑΙ” (“New Drachma”), applied during Greece’s dramatic monetary reforms of the early 1940s.
The fine classical line engraving preserves the artistic style of the original series, while the surcharge reflects an important moment in Greece’s wartime postal and economic history. This used example, with a clear circular cancellation, is a desirable study piece for collectors interested in Greek surcharges, inflation-era issues, and classical-themed philately.
A strong thematic combination of Olympics, Ancient Greece, and Historical Overprints.
